National Conference on
“Perspectives & Trends in Plant Sciences and Biotechnology”
February 21-23, 2014
Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh
Panjab University is one of the oldest Universities in India and recently has been ranked number 1 among Indian Universities. It was established in 1882 at Lahore. The University campus is spread over an area of 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25 of the city. University has 75 teaching and research departments and 15 Centers/Chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located at Chandigarh. University has 188 affiliated colleges spread over Punjab and having one rural Regional Centre at Kauni, and 3 Regional Centers at Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur. Department of Botany was established in 1919 at Lahore. It shifted to Chandigarh in 1960 from Khalsa College, Amritsar where it had been housed temporarily after partition of the country in 1947 with Prof. P.N. Mehra as the Head of the Department.
The Department (Housed in Kashyap Block) has grown into a well-recognized centre for higher learning and research in structural, functional and evolutionary aspects of Plants. In fact, this is the only Botany Department in the country, which has the necessary expertise to attend to all plant groups. While the contributions have been tremendous in the understanding of fundamentals of Plant Sciences, the department has also kept pace with the changing national priorities. Some of the major areas of research in the Department are: improvement and propagation cultivation; identification of ecofriendly herbicides and pesticides; evaluation and conservation of plant biodiversity; stress physiology; tissue culture and importance of microbes in human welfare. The department attracts students from within and outside the country. In addition to teaching through modern techniques, seminars, symposia, workshops, invited lectures and botanical excursions are an integral part of academic programme of the Department.
Society for Plant Research (SPR) was established in 1988 by the Department of Botany, Bareilly College, Bareilly, a premier college of northern India. The Society is having its Editorial office in the Department of Cell Biology, College of Biotechnology, S. V. P. University of Agriculture & Technology, Meerut, 250110, India and Administrative Office at 204, Green Estate, Meerut. This society has so far organized eight national and one international conferences on upcoming topics of national and international interest including Biotechnology, Biodiversity, Ecorestoration and related thrust areas since 1994. SPR is publishing a biannual International journal VEGETOS (ISSN 0970-4078, Online ISSN 2229-4473) which is being indexed by Thomson Reuters with an IMPACT FACTOR of 0.04, CABI, Elsevier, Indian Science Abstract, MAAPA and NAAS (Impact Factor 6.2). VEGETOS is now having its own website www.vegetosindia.org which will serve the members, visitors, refrees and the scientific community working on the aspects of plant science, plant biotechnology, agriculture etc. The Society for Plant Research is fortunate to have its road map amidst the beautiful, lush green academic campus of Panjab University, Chandigarh. You are welcome to this scientific assemblage.
